$25,000 raised to help domestic abuse victims The Asian Women's Alliance for Kinship and Equality, a Rockland based social service organization, raised over $25,000 to help victims of domestic violence at its annual fundraiser.

More than 150 people from the tristate area of NY, New Jersey and Connecticut attended the event held in new York City recently, according to Raman Kaul, president of AWAKE.

Each year, the group honors a person who has worked toward furthering the organization's mission. This year's honoree was Jaslin Chopra who served as its past president and under whose leadership, the domestic violence program gained significant momentum, according to Kaul.

In addition, four attorneys from Rockland and Westchester counties were honored for their role in helping survivors in their legal struggle against their abusers for lower fee or on a pro bono basis.

AWAKE is a grassroots organization with several objectives. Its central mission is to provide assistance and support to women and children who live with abusive relatives.

"The situation is unhealthy and dangerous for these women and children by the time they seek assistance,"said Kaul.
